Tanzania is not a cheap safari destination, and we would rather tell you that directly than have you discover it during an inquiry. This guide breaks down every cost driver so you can plan a realistic budget before reaching out to any operator.
A private mid-range Tanzania safari costs from USD 350 per person per day. Luxury starts at USD 650. The biggest single cost driver is not the operator margin. It is government park and conservation fees, charged per person per night and non-negotiable. Understanding where the money goes before you inquire makes every conversation more productive.
"The guests who are least surprised by safari pricing are those who understood park fees before they arrived. When you know that Serengeti alone costs USD 70 per person per day just to enter, the rest of the number makes sense."
The range between a budget group safari and a luxury private fly-in journey can be ten times the price. Understanding what each level actually buys helps you decide what matters most and plan a budget that reflects those priorities.
Every operator charges the same park fees because they are set by TANAPA and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. They are not negotiable and they are not markup. A six-night northern circuit passes through three or four parks, and the cumulative fee is a substantial part of the total cost.
| Park / Conservation Area | Fee Per Person Per Night | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Serengeti National Park | USD 70 | Applies to every night inside the park boundary including mobile camps and permanent lodges. |
| Ngorongoro Conservation Area | USD 70 + crater fee | Separate crater descent fee of USD 70 per vehicle per descent applies in addition to the conservation area fee. |
| Tarangire National Park | USD 53 | Significant for multi-night stays, especially dry season when the park is at its best. |
| Lake Manyara National Park | USD 53 | Often visited as a day trip or single-night stop, which limits total fee exposure. |
| Nyerere National Park | USD 50 | Southern circuit. Lower fees than northern parks with boat safari access and a remote setting. |
| Ruaha National Park | USD 50 | Tanzania's second largest park. Lower fees, fewer vehicles, one of the least-visited wilderness areas in the country. |
Fee rates as of 2025. Subject to change by TANAPA and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. All fees are quoted in USD and included transparently in our proposals.
The most significant variable in a safari budget after park fees is accommodation. Understanding what each tier delivers helps match expectations to spend before booking.

Basic tented camps or lodges, shared vehicles with other travellers, fixed meal times, and limited flexibility on timing and stops. Suitable where the priority is wildlife rather than the camp experience.
Private vehicle and guide, comfortable permanent tented camps with en-suite facilities, full board, and the flexibility to extend sightings and adjust the day's rhythm. This is what we operate for most guests.
Premium tented lodges and bush camps, private fly-in transfers between parks, elevated food and service standards, and the best-positioned camps in each region at the right time of year.
On a standard northern circuit, driving is practical. The distance from Tarangire to Ngorongoro is two to three hours. Ngorongoro to Central Serengeti is three to four hours. These are manageable travel days and the drives pass through interesting landscapes. Flying becomes more relevant on longer journeys or when connecting to the southern parks.
| Route | Drive Time | Flight Time | Approx Flight Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arusha to Serengeti Central | 7–8 hrs | ~1 hr | USD 250–350 pp |
| Serengeti Central to Northern | 3–4 hrs | ~25 min | USD 150–200 pp |

Camp rates in Tanzania follow wildlife season, not calendar months. Understanding the pricing windows helps you find the best balance of cost and experience for your travel style.
The highest rates of the year. River crossing season in the northern Serengeti drives significant demand from July through October. Book well ahead and budget at the upper end of the tier you are considering.
Calving season in the southern Serengeti draws demand but not at the same level as peak crossing season. Good rates, extraordinary calving activity, and far fewer vehicles than peak.
The lowest rates of the year. Camp rates drop by 20 to 40 percent. Parks are quiet, landscapes lush and dramatically lit, birdwatching at its peak. June is a genuine sweet spot before peak crowds return.
Rates spike around Christmas and New Year to near-peak levels. If your window includes that week, budget accordingly or shift dates by a week where possible.
Illustrative totals based on real itinerary combinations. Per person, two people travelling together, mid-range accommodation, shoulder season. Includes park fees, accommodation, private vehicle, guide, and all meals. Excludes international flights and gratuities.
| Journey | Duration | Parks | Approx Total Per Person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short Northern Escape | 5 nights | Tarangire, Ngorongoro | USD 2,800–3,500 |
| Classic Northern Circuit | 7 nights | Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti | USD 4,200–5,500 |
| Northern Circuit + Serengeti Focus | 9 nights | Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti x4 | USD 5,500–7,000 |

| Southern Parks | 7 nights | Nyerere, Ruaha, fly-in | USD 6,500–9,000 |
All figures USD. Based on two adults sharing, mid-range accommodation, private vehicle, shoulder season. Peak season adds approximately 20 to 30 percent.
The largest cost is government park fees set by TANAPA, non-negotiable and charged per person per night. Serengeti is USD 70 per person per night. Add accommodation, a private guide and vehicle, all meals, and domestic transfers and the daily rate reflects genuine costs, not inflated margins.
Our daily rate includes park fees, private vehicle and experienced guide, accommodation and all meals at camp, and game drives within the park. Domestic flights, optional experiences such as balloon or walking safari, international flights, and gratuities are priced separately and clearly quoted in every proposal.
Yes, by 20 to 40 percent at most properties. Green season (April through June) brings lush landscapes, quieter parks, and excellent birdwatching. The wildlife experience does not disappear in the green season, though roads can be more challenging in April and May.
Occasionally, but rarely for the camps and windows you want most. Peak season camps in the northern Serengeti book out six months ahead or more. Last-minute availability tends to be in less desirable positions or periods. Booking three to six months ahead is more reliable.
Gratuities for your guide and camp staff are customary and expected. A standard guide tip is USD 15 to USD 25 per day. Camp staff tips are typically USD 5 to USD 10 per person per night distributed to the team. We share detailed guidance with every guest before departure.
Yes. Solo travellers pay a single supplement at most camps, typically 50 percent of the shared rate, and bear the full private vehicle cost alone. We build solo safari costs transparently and can suggest itineraries and camps that minimise single supplement exposure.
Each of these is departure-ready and represents a real combination of parks, nights, and accommodation quality.
