Many travelers arrive thinking Kilimanjaro is mainly a physical challenge. In reality, altitude and pacing shape the experience far more than most expect before arriving in Tanzania.
The routes themselves feel very different from one another. Some are quieter and more gradual. Others are more scenic, steeper, or busier during peak periods. Choosing the right route has a major impact on how the climb feels day by day. We help with that decision before you commit to anything.
Read the Kilimanjaro Climbing Guide →Five routes, each with its own character. The right choice depends on your fitness, preferred scenery, timeline, and how much time you want on the mountain.

| Northern Circuit | 8–9 days | 8 days | Moderate+ | Exceptional | Quietest | Highest success rate, most remote feel | View Route → |
6–7 Days
The "Whiskey Route." Scenic and varied, with strong acclimatization flow. Busy during peak season but one of the most rewarding days-by-day experiences on the mountain.
Explore Machame →
7–8 Days
The western approach with the best overall acclimatization profile. Quieter trails, broader landscape views, and the most recommended route for first-time summit climbers.
Explore Lemosho →
8–9 Days
The longest route on the mountain. Exceptional acclimatization, the quietest trails, and a 360-degree circumnavigation of the summit cone that no other route covers.
Explore Northern Circuit →
5–6 Days
The only route using permanent mountain huts rather than tents. A different atmosphere, slightly shorter duration, and the same summit reward. Best for those who prefer sleeping in a structure on the mountain.
Explore Marangu →
6–7 Days
The northern approach feels noticeably different from the southern rainforest routes. Drier, quieter, and with a distinct landscape character that makes the experience feel genuinely separate from the popular southern corridors.
Explore Rongai →We are based in Moshi at the foot of the mountain. Our guides know Kilimanjaro through years of climbing it, not through training programmes. Safety, porter welfare, and honest acclimatization planning are not optional extras here. They are the standard.
Our Responsible Travel Standards →Our lead guides are KINAPA certified and carry years of Kilimanjaro experience. They know the signs of altitude stress, the camp timings that matter, and how to read a climber's pace on summit night.
AGE does not operate rushed five-day climbs. Most of our Kilimanjaro programmes use seven or more trekking days, with Marangu run as a six-day programme with an added acclimatisation day. Our pacing is built around physiology, not just convenience.
We comply with KPAP standards: proper wages, weight limits, and full equipment provision for every crew member on every climb. Porter welfare is not a talking point here. It is how we operate.
We carry supplemental oxygen, first aid equipment, pulse oximeters, and emergency communication on every climb. Altitude-related decisions are made by our guides, not by social pressure.
Park fees, all meals, quality tents and sleeping mats, a dining tent, and a full mountain crew are included. We provide a complete kit list and equipment guidance well before you arrive in Tanzania.
Proper preparation improves both your summit success rate and the overall quality of the experience. Here is what to focus on.
Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek, but cardiovascular fitness matters. We recommend hiking with a loaded pack, sustained cardio training, and leg strength work in the months before the climb. You do not need to be an athlete, but you do need stamina.
Altitude affects people differently regardless of fitness level. Our itineraries build in proper acclimatization days and our guides monitor your health throughout. We carry emergency oxygen and have descent protocols for every altitude concern.
Layering is everything. Summit night temperatures can drop below -15°C while the rainforest entry is warm and humid. We provide a detailed kit list covering base layers, insulation, waterproofs, sleeping bag rating, boots, gaiters, and headlamp specifics.
Summit night is the hardest part of any Kilimanjaro climb. Cold, darkness, and altitude combine at 3am on a steep ridge. Mental resilience and trust in your guide are as important as physical fitness. Most summits are won in the mind before they are won on the mountain.
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. Two main dry windows offer the best conditions. Green season periods have quieter trails and lower rates.
Warm conditions on the mountain with reliable weather from base to summit. The busiest period on all routes, particularly Machame. Excellent visibility on clear summit days. Peak pricing applies.
Clear skies, colder temperatures, and noticeably fewer climbers on the trails. Excellent for summit views and a quieter overall experience. One of the most underrated periods on the mountain.
Short rains, often clearing for good summit conditions in the afternoons. Quiet trails, lower rates, and the rainforest lower zone is particularly lush. Suitable for those with flexible schedules.
The main wet season brings persistent rain and low visibility. Trails can be slippery and summit views are often obscured by cloud cover. Lower rates reflect the conditions. Possible for determined climbers but not recommended as a first choice.
Most climbers have more of Tanzania to explore after Kilimanjaro. The two most natural extensions are a wildlife safari or an Indian Ocean recovery in Zanzibar. Both are easily combined with the climb.
The summit perspective and the plains perspective are very different experiences. Many climbers find that a few days in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro after descending the mountain creates a complete, deeply varied Tanzania journey. We handle the full transition from mountain to wildlife camp.
After summit day, most climbers want warm, flat, and still. Zanzibar delivers all three. A few days on the Indian Ocean coast allows the body to recover properly while the experience of the mountain settles. Sea air, stone town culture, and the knowledge that you have just stood at 5,895 metres.
Most climbers arrive in Moshi a day before their climb and leave a day or two after. These half-day and full-day experiences work well in both windows.
