KILIMANJARO CLIMBS

Guided Kilimanjaro
Climbs in Tanzania

Climbing Kilimanjaro is as much about rhythm and acclimatization as it is about reaching the summit. The experience changes completely from rainforest trails to alpine desert to the cold, open summit sky. Our climbs are planned around pacing and mountain support, not speed.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The Mountain Feels Different Once the Pace Slows Down

Many travelers arrive thinking Kilimanjaro is mainly a physical challenge. In reality, altitude and pacing shape the experience far more than most expect before arriving in Tanzania.

The routes themselves feel very different from one another. Some are quieter and more gradual. Others are more scenic, steeper, or busier during peak periods. Choosing the right route has a major impact on how the climb feels day by day. We help with that decision before you commit to anything.

WHY CLIMB WITH US

Climb With
Confidence

We are based in Moshi at the foot of the mountain. Our guides know Kilimanjaro through years of climbing it, not through training programmes. Safety, porter welfare, and honest acclimatization planning are not optional extras here. They are the standard.

Our Responsible Travel Standards →
Certified Mountain Guides

Our lead guides are KINAPA certified and carry years of Kilimanjaro experience. They know the signs of altitude stress, the camp timings that matter, and how to read a climber's pace on summit night.

Proper Acclimatization

AGE does not operate rushed five-day climbs. Most of our Kilimanjaro programmes use seven or more trekking days, with Marangu run as a six-day programme with an added acclimatisation day. Our pacing is built around physiology, not just convenience.

Fair Porter Standards

We comply with KPAP standards: proper wages, weight limits, and full equipment provision for every crew member on every climb. Porter welfare is not a talking point here. It is how we operate.

Emergency Protocols

We carry supplemental oxygen, first aid equipment, pulse oximeters, and emergency communication on every climb. Altitude-related decisions are made by our guides, not by social pressure.

Full Crew and Equipment

Park fees, all meals, quality tents and sleeping mats, a dining tent, and a full mountain crew are included. We provide a complete kit list and equipment guidance well before you arrive in Tanzania.

PREPARATION

Getting Ready for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Proper preparation improves both your summit success rate and the overall quality of the experience. Here is what to focus on.

Fitness Preparation

Kilimanjaro is a non-technical trek, but cardiovascular fitness matters. We recommend hiking with a loaded pack, sustained cardio training, and leg strength work in the months before the climb. You do not need to be an athlete, but you do need stamina.

Altitude Awareness

Altitude affects people differently regardless of fitness level. Our itineraries build in proper acclimatization days and our guides monitor your health throughout. We carry emergency oxygen and have descent protocols for every altitude concern.

What to Pack

Layering is everything. Summit night temperatures can drop below -15°C while the rainforest entry is warm and humid. We provide a detailed kit list covering base layers, insulation, waterproofs, sleeping bag rating, boots, gaiters, and headlamp specifics.

Mental Preparation

Summit night is the hardest part of any Kilimanjaro climb. Cold, darkness, and altitude combine at 3am on a steep ridge. Mental resilience and trust in your guide are as important as physical fitness. Most summits are won in the mind before they are won on the mountain.

PLANNING YOUR CLIMB

When to Climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. Two main dry windows offer the best conditions. Green season periods have quieter trails and lower rates.

Primary Dry Season

June to October

Warm conditions on the mountain with reliable weather from base to summit. The busiest period on all routes, particularly Machame. Excellent visibility on clear summit days. Peak pricing applies.

JuneJulyAugustSeptemberOctober
Secondary Dry Season

January to March

Clear skies, colder temperatures, and noticeably fewer climbers on the trails. Excellent for summit views and a quieter overall experience. One of the most underrated periods on the mountain.

JanuaryFebruaryMarch
Green Season

November to December

Short rains, often clearing for good summit conditions in the afternoons. Quiet trails, lower rates, and the rainforest lower zone is particularly lush. Suitable for those with flexible schedules.

NovemberDecember
Avoid if Possible

April to May

The main wet season brings persistent rain and low visibility. Trails can be slippery and summit views are often obscured by cloud cover. Lower rates reflect the conditions. Possible for determined climbers but not recommended as a first choice.

AFTER YOUR CLIMB

Extend Your Tanzania Journey

Most climbers have more of Tanzania to explore after Kilimanjaro. The two most natural extensions are a wildlife safari or an Indian Ocean recovery in Zanzibar. Both are easily combined with the climb.

BEFORE OR AFTER YOUR CLIMB

Day Experiences Near Moshi

Most climbers arrive in Moshi a day before their climb and leave a day or two after. These half-day and full-day experiences work well in both windows.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Kilimanjaro: Before You Decide

The questions most climbers ask when they are still weighing up the decision.

Do I need technical climbing experience?
No. Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb. There is no rope work, no exposed scrambling, and no equipment beyond walking gear required. Good cardiovascular fitness and mental resilience matter far more than climbing skills. We guide first-time trekkers to the summit regularly.
Which route should I choose?
Lemosho is our top recommendation for most climbers: better acclimatization, less crowded trails, and exceptional scenery. Machame is the most popular and slightly cheaper. If you have 8 to 9 days and want the highest success rate with the quietest experience, the Northern Circuit is the best on the mountain.
What is the summit success rate?
Our success rates are consistently high because AGE does not operate rushed five-day climbs. Most of our Kilimanjaro programmes use seven or more trekking days. Marangu is the exception, which we run as a six-day programme with an added acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut. The most common reason climbers do not reach Uhuru Peak is compressing the acclimatisation window on a shorter itinerary.
What is included in the climb?
KINAPA park and rescue fees, a certified lead guide, assistant guides, trained porters, all meals on the mountain, camping equipment (tents, sleeping mats, dining tent, kitchen equipment), and transfers from Moshi. We provide a full itemised breakdown in your quotation.
How much does a Kilimanjaro climb cost?
Kilimanjaro climb costs reflect significant mandatory park fees (USD 300 to 800+ depending on route and duration), a full crew, and guide quality. We do not operate at the low-cost end of the market where corners are cut on porter welfare, guide experience, or acclimatization time. Contact us for a full itemised quotation.
What about altitude sickness?
Our guides monitor your oxygen saturation and overall condition daily using pulse oximeters. We carry emergency oxygen, a Gamow bag, and first aid equipment on every climb. If descent is necessary for medical reasons, our protocols are clear and the decision is made by the guide, not by the climber.
