Our Approach

Zanzibar Beyond the Beach

Most visitors see Zanzibar primarily through its beaches. This journey is designed for guests who want the island in full: the UNESCO old town with its layered Arab, Portuguese, and Swahili history; the interior spice farms that gave the island its original commercial identity; and two different coastlines with contrasting characters.

Three nights in Stone Town is unusual for a tourist itinerary but correct for experiencing the city fully. The mornings are different from the evenings. The back alleys of the north quarter feel different from the waterfront at Forodhani. By the third day, you stop navigating and start inhabiting the place.

The itinerary then moves to the north coast for reef access and reliable swimming, and ends on the quieter east coast, tidal, remote, and completely different in atmosphere from anywhere else on the island. Zanzibar is not one place. This journey shows why.

Common Questions

Before You Book

Why three nights in Stone Town?
One night is an orientation. Two nights allows a full day of exploration. Three nights is the point at which the place feels familiar, the evenings change with each day. For guests interested in the history and culture, three nights is the right duration.
What is the difference between the north and east coasts?
The north coast at Nungwi and Kendwa has consistent swimming at any tide. The east coast at Paje and Jambiani is more exposed, with significant tidal variation that affects beach access at low tide. The east coast is quieter, less developed, and better for kite surfing.
Is kite surfing available on this itinerary?
Yes. Paje on the east coast is one of East Africa's best kite surfing locations. We can arrange lessons and equipment through established schools at the beach.
Can this be combined with a Tanzania safari?
Yes. A domestic flight from Arusha connects to Zanzibar in 90 minutes. We manage the full transition as one seamless journey. The Stone Town and Coast journey works well as the island conclusion to any northern Tanzania safari.
Can the itinerary be shortened to 6 days?
Yes. Removing one east coast night creates a 6-day version. Alternatively, the Zanzibar Beach Escape covers Stone Town and north coast in 6 days without the east coast component.
What is the best time to visit?
The north coast is swimmable year-round. June to October is dry and the east coast is windier, ideal for kite surfing. December to March is warm season with calm conditions. The cultural Stone Town element is unaffected by season.
