A slower sensory journey through the spice landscapes and agricultural heritage of Zanzibar.
Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island, and this journey takes you into the heart of its agricultural tradition. You will visit a working spice farm, where your guide will introduce you to cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, and other tropical spices. You will see how they grow, learn about their uses in cooking and medicine, and taste fresh fruit straight from the trees – jackfruit, rambutan, and more. The walk is gentle, the pace slow, and at the end, you can buy fresh spices directly from the farm.
The farm is shaded by palm fronds and spice trees. Your guide cuts a leaf, hands it to you, and the scent of cloves fills the air. You taste a slice of jackfruit, sticky and sweet. A local farmer demonstrates how nutmeg is harvested. The walk is relaxed, and there is no rush to move from one spice to the next. You leave with a deeper understanding of why Zanzibar's spice trade shaped the island – and a small bag of fresh vanilla beans.
Spice farms are active in all seasons. The harvest varies, but the experience is always rich in scents and flavours.
Let us arrange a private spice tour – a sensory and educational addition to your island stay.
